Day 27 – Craig Coetsee of Rapid Space
Craig Coetsee of Rapid Space is a self-taught artist from Melbourne, Australia. Craig is primarily a fashion designer and creates awesome collage art in his spare time. Mega talented!!
Are you a self taught artist, or what studies did you do to get where you are today?
I’m self taught.
What tools, programs and apps do you love or cannot live without?
Scissors, Camera, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
Your art provides inspirations to so many others. What or who inspires you?
I grew up as a kid in the early 90’s rave scene so music and flyer artwork from that era left its mark on me. I post a track title and artist with every art piece I put on IG for reflection and to create the mood I’m feeling when I created the art. Usually, I gravitate toward concepts that tend to be on the darker side and stir a deeper response in me when I create them. I’m constantly chasing a contrast in ideas and images I use.
Can you describe your process including how long a piece of art or photography takes you from concept to complete?
I always start with an image that inspires me. I generally try to use 3 elements in my collage art. I’m a believer in Less is More. Personally, I like simple art with strong elements. My best art usually takes me no longer than an hour. I find the longest part is usually digging through all my resources for new images.
What part of your process do you love the most?
I love coming up with an idea and not wanting to change it!
If you weren’t an artist, what do you think you would be doing for work?
I work in a creative field. I’m a fashion designer and have been in the industry going on 20 years. I’m constantly surrounded by creativity so for me my collage work is an outlet that I don’t get through designing apparel. It’s a hobby that gives me a nice balance. I don’t think I could do anything else that wasn’t creative in some way.
Who is the most fascinating or inspiring person you have met or worked with?
I had the chance to work with a guy named Michael Thomson who founded an iconic 80’s surf brand called Gotcha. He is the Godfather of old school surf culture. His insights and knowledge on art, fashion and design process were mind blowing.
Name an underrated artist
My Mum! She’s an exceptionally talented oil painter. I grew up staring into her paintings for hours as a kid. Her attention to detail is remarkable.
What artwork of yours are you most proud of?
I’m usually only pumped on the artwork I’ve just finished and havent posted yet. I always feel like my work looks old when I look back at it. I seem to always look back and think it could have been better if i had of done this or that…
What’s next in the professional pipe works for you?
Creatively, I’ve been on a very long and satisfying journey in my fashion career which continues to inspire every aspect of my life. My collage art is an outlet which I’ll continue to pursue and hopefully along the way others can also enjoy it if they choose.
