Day 15 – Olivia Bezett

Olivia Bezett from New Zealand is a talented self-taught artist.  Olivia is only 20 years old and the youngest artist in this months feature series.

Are you a self-taught artist, or what studies did you do to get where you are today?
I am self-taught. I left school at the age of 16 (nearly 17) before my final year of school to become a full-time artist. I did take art as a subject in school though, and I gained endorsed excellence’s for the two years I studied it.

What tools, programs and apps do you love or cannot live without?
I’d be nowhere without my colored pencils! I use Derwent and they are my everything.

Your art provides inspirations to so many others.  What or who inspires you?
My main source of inspiration most definitely comes from my mother, Josephine Davis (she paints under her maiden name) and also Marco Mazzoni! I find inspiration through animals too, and whenever I travel somewhere (I am a very keen traveler) I’m full of ideas when I come home!

Can you describe your process including how long a piece of art or photography takes you from concept to complete?
I start every piece with a rough sketch and then begin to draw the eye with color. I spend a LONG time  on the eyes usually, and then move outwards from there. Every piece takes me a different amount of time, depending on size and subject, but most pieces take roughly 10 hours. Once the original is finished, I take a photo and edit it to turn it into a print.

What part of your process do you love the most?
I love looking at a blank piece of paper and having the freedom to create whatever I decide! I never really ‘plan’ my artworks, so it’s a very exciting process because even I don’t know how it’s going to turn out!

If you weren’t an artist, what do you think you would be doing for work?
If I wasn’t an artist, I would 100% be a chef. Or a baker. That’s what I was planning to be up until one day before my final year of school, it was a very spur of the moment decision and very unlike me. I wanted to do something different from everyone else in my family (they’re all somehow art related careers) but i just fell into it. I still love to cook and bake and I occasionally do cake orders. My partner is a chef so he is living my other dream which is pretty cool!

Who is the most fascinating or inspiring person you have met or worked with?
I got the chance to meet Dick Frizzell (a famous NZ artist) and spend the day with him. He had some great advice for me and my artwork. I also got to meet Max Gimblett who also had amazing advice and encouraging words for my artistic career! In all honesty though, growing up with an artist for a mother, an animator for a brother, and an art dealer/gallery owner/ framer for a father, I was inspired from a very young age by my entire family!

Name an underrated artist
Even though he does have a very impressive following already, Marco Mazzoni I think deserves much more praise than what he gets! I’ve been collecting is work since I was 14 and I’m running out of room on my walls!

What artwork of yours are you most proud of?
My Butterfly bunny (the first one I ever did that’s on my business cards) is my most loved piece. I wish I never sold the original!

What’s next in the professional pipe works for you?
I plan to keep doing what I’m doing, get through my 3.5 year commission waiting list (eek) and then have another exhibition maybe at the end of next year if I have time! I look forward to seeing where this all takes me!

Bonus fun questions
What is your pet peeve?
If were talking about art related pet peeves, mine is definitely when I accidentally drop one of my pencils onto the paper (happens all the time) and it marks my perfectly white background. You CAN’T rub that stuff out!
What is your current favourite album?
Not albums, but my fave music is a mixture of Disney soundtracks, musicals and really old school music like Cat Stevens, The Beetles and the Jersey Boys. Quite a mixture!
Apart from art, what is your favourite thing to do?
Bake or cook! I am a huge Chelsea Winter fan.
If you could tame any animal and have it as a pet, which one would it be and why?
A Panda for sure!
Fun Fact
I am allergic to all animals 🙁 I do have a pet mini lop bunny though (who yes, I’m still allergic to) which is typical because animals are my favorite thing in the world! I also forgot to mention that I started this job at 16 and have recently turned 20. I often get mistaken for being in my thirties so I thought I would clarify that!
