Day 28 – Ashiya Art

Ashiya Art is a, for the most-part, self taught artist from Russia and wonderful, whimsical illustrator.  Her medium of choice is watercolour.  She loves animation (and cats) and is currently creating a webtoon!

Are you a self taught artist, or what studies did you do to get where you are today?
When I started learning art, no one teached illustration in my area. So even though I graduated from an art school it doesn’t mean anything, it was more like a time-killing thing. University helped me a little with color/composition/anatomy understanding but mostly I can say that I learned things by myself.

What tools, programs and apps do you love or cannot live without?
Watercolor, of course!

Cat Person © Ashiya ArtYour art provides inspirations to so many others. What or who inspires you?
Basically I can get inspiration from anything, it can be a super random thing like hair flow or colors of a rainbow on a rainy day. I’m inspired by  Miyazaki Hayao’s and Shinkai Makoto’s animation films. Also have you seen a Tekkon Kinkreet animation movie? Your eyes will fall out because of the background details there. It’s just amazing.

Can you describe your process including how long a piece of art or photography takes you from concept to complete?
It depends on so many things like details and complexity of the illustration, my mood and energy level. I can draw a 30 minute portrait because I was very inspired, or I could spend a day on it because I just had to draw it and my energy level is very low. I can spend a week on a super detailed work for a client with a bunch of approvals and other stuff or I can draw the same super detailed work within two days because I was inspired and I don’t have to seek approvals.

What part of your process do you love the most?
If it’s a work I do because of inspiration in a good mood – eveything? Otherwise why even to do it 😀 If you don’t like any part of your creating process – change it!

If you weren’t an artist, what do you think you would be doing for work?
I think it will be any profession related to translations because I love to learn languages.  Or a cook/confectioner because I love to cook food! Also I can imagine myself being someone like a nekocafe/cat shelter owner or worker because I love cats.

Who is the most fascinating or inspiring person you have met or worked with?
I barely get fascinated by people near me but I deeply respect anyone who can make great things. It may not inspire me but motivate to work better and better.

What artwork of yours are you most proud of?
I think it’s the soju concept we did last year with Unblvbl studio and any ilustration with a super detailed background.

What’s next in the professional pipe works for you?
I usually prefer to not telling my plans to anyone (just in case), but since a lot of people knows this already – I plan to start drawing a webtoon soon!

Bonus Fun Questions
What is your pet peeve?
I have a cat named Ashley, sometimes I show her in my videos 😀 Also I have a goldfish named Igor and some mystus tengara
Apart from art, what is your favourite thing to do?
I love to cook, to watch korean and japanese dramas and to walk around the city to take some references for background
